Setback or Step Forward?

I could tell that training started off on the wrong foot this week when on Monday I found myself nutritionally depleted after one spin class. I didn’t expect this trend to continue the next morning by waking up in the early hours on Tuesday to a stomach revolt that proceeded to empty the contents of my stomach throughout the rest of day, in essence putting me on a forced fast for 24 to 48 hours. Consequently, my training plan for the week was derailed and my body feels fatigued and weak.

There is a bright side, however. My little setback has brought me a step forward. Last night I bought the book “The Triathlete’s Training Bible” and I’m loving the information. This book feels like it’s talking directly to me and it is really filling in the gaps of information that I am looking for during this process to striving for the Half Silverman. The questions about training versus rest are addressed. How should I increase my sessions? Should I train once a day or twice? What are the benefits and drawbacks? The author talks about philosophy of training and how each of us has one. It’s the foundation of how we train whether we know it or not.

I am looking forward to delving into this book more and sharing as I go through the information. The thought for today is this: Training for a triathlon is a commitment. 365 days a year, 24 hours a day. What is your goal? How serious are you? What are you doing TODAY to reach your goal?

Happy training everyone!

I am coming to terms with the fact that completing the Half Silverman this year is a very serious and genuine goal for me this year. It’s not a dalliance. I WANT this. I WANT to do this for ME and in the company of the many friends that I have gathered on this journey. My goal is not only to complete this journey as it was in the past, but I have a time goal now. I am striving for under 9 hours – feeling good and happy! Today I’m gather information. Tomorrow, I’m riding my bike. :)

Yea! I feel like you are one step ahead of me! I am still at the I want to complete this stage! I think when I get the lungs for the swimming it will feel more like a possibility to set a time goal. I am having a great time training with you and Annette! Thanks for being my little “posse” :)

  • Step up – the body needs rest. I currently have one rest day scheduled each week, where I don’t do any workouts at all. I also have one step down week each month, where I have more free flowing workouts and can recover from the previous efforts. Without the rest, your body never rebuilds and recovers. It’s the rebuilding where the gains are made.

Bonnie – A goal to Complete is perfect goal. That’s all you need at this point, is the will to finish the event.

Thanks for your thoughts and encouragement Tracy! Although my “stomach thing” lasted only for a day, I feel like I’m still recovering from it. It’s like the body and muscles are not at the same place. And considering that I have this aversion to chicken and some other foods right now as a result, I don’t feel like I’m feeling my body enough to jump right back in to where I was. I find that I have to take a few steps back, training-wise and build again. That’s okay except it bruises the ego somewhat. ;-P
