While I felt slightly guilty for not finding time to run or stretch or anything yesterday, today has made up for it. I collaborated with James Wong, owner and personal trainer at Studio 222 Personal Training Centers in Las Vegas. I rent my massage room out of there; and truth be told, I actually hold a personal training certification. I’m looking forward to putting that knowledge to use soon, but also wanted to collaborate with James to get his thoughts.

In terms of the 3 different elements of Silverman, I am confident that 12 months is more than enough time to prepare. Now this doesn’t mean that I have need A LOT of work to do. I think my swim stroke is decent, but I haven’t swam in years and need to develop the strength and endurance for 1.2 miles – which means training for at least 1.5 miles if not 2 miles. For 56 miles of biking, I know I can do the distance – it’s the hills that I’m worried about. For the run, I know I can run/walk 13.2 miles, but I want to be stronger than that.

Twelve months is a lot of time. Plenty of time to prepare and I don’t want to squander any of it. James suggests to start with focusing on developing core and muscle specific strength in the first 6 weeks or so. This will prepare my body for developing endurance. In the meantime, I will go easy/moderate on each of the run, swim, bike elements. I will also focus in on 25 solid military push-ups, squats and lunges each day. I know my core needs work. I think this is a great idea!

Nicole teaching yoga at Studio 222

This afternoon, I also had a private yoga session with Nicole Johnson. Nicole teaches at Studio 222 and at several studios in Las Vegas and Henderson. Because my hamstrings and inner thighs were tight from my run yesterday, we focused on yoga for stretching to open up the hips and legs. Boy! Some of those poses were hard! But they were very effective at the same time. Flexibility training, such as yoga will be essential for the training program. As a massage therapist working on many athletes out there, I know that many of you don’t do your stretches, or don’t do them long enough. Spending time on flexibility helps the muscles stay supple, hydrated and ready to work. Yoga is definitely going to be in my program!
